Advantages to Porcelain Veneers

34554861_sPorcelain veneers for your teeth are a low maintenance fix for stained or chipped teeth. They are custom-fitted and are cemented to your natural teeth. In addition to covering stains and chips, they can be used to give you a straighter smile or cover the gaps between teeth.

Creating porcelain veneers usually requires three visits to a dental office. The first visit will be a consultation where the cosmetic dentist will discuss the procedure and cost with the patient.

During the second visit, impressions and pictures are taken of the teeth. These impressions and pictures are sent to the lab where the veneers will be shaped to match the current teeth and any changes the patient wants. Temporary veneers can be applied to the teeth during this visit.

The third visit is where the actual porcelain veneers are cemented to the existing teeth. After the third visit, the patient will be able to walk out of the office with a perfect smile.

Some of the advantages that porcelain veneers offer include:

  • Providing a natural tooth appearance.
  • Porcelain veneers are more stain resistant than natural teeth.
  • Porcelain doesn’t irritate gum tissue.
  • Users can choose the color of the porcelain veneer, allowing teeth to appear as natural or as white as the user wants.
  • Veneers change the color and shape of a tooth without extensive shaping and dental work prior to the procedure.

There are some disadvantages to veneers. They last between five and ten years, so they are a long-term, but not permanent solution to discolored or chipped teeth. Porcelain veneers can be chipped or broken. For patients who have unhealthy teeth, or those who grind or clench their teeth, they are a poor solution. Grinding and clenching can dislodge or chip porcelain veneers.
