The Best Daily Dental Routine

The simplicity of accessing this information leaves us with no excuse not to take great care of our mouths. All you need to do is follow the steps below to ensure your mouth will stay in great shape and help you prevent dangerous illnesses like gum disease and gingivitis.

Brush Smarter, Not Harder

Brushing vigorously and roughly won’t help your teeth get any cleaner, and in fact it will lead to gum erosion as you place too much pressure on the inside of your mouth. Instead, brush for two minutes twice a day. If two minutes feels like an eternity, try brushing during TV commercials to keep your mind busy and automatically time yourself for a longer brushing length. Brushing for a full two minutes can be especially hard for children, but many toothbrushes now come equipped with music, songs, and chants that keep children brushing excitedly until time is up.

Don’t Skip the Floss

Most adults admit to neglecting their tubes of floss on a daily basis. Taking one or two extra minutes to floss will reap great rewards for your teeth as you attack plaque and ensure your teeth are free of tarter. If you’re unsure of how to begin, use a piece of floss about 18 inches long, wrap it around the middle finger of each hand, grip the floss between the thumb and index finger of each hand, and gently bring the floss up and down between each tooth. Dentists recommend beginning with the lower front teeth, continuing to the upper front teeth, and then moving around the rest of the mouth. It’s important to floss up or down to the gum line. If you or your children are still feeling resistant, many handy floss holders are offered now that eliminate the challenges of wrapping floss. Some are even flavored for kids to enjoy!

Finish with a Rinse

Mouthwashes and other rinses can help target specific dental problems. They can fight germs that cause gum disease, help prevent dry mouth, and even provide extra fluoride if needed.

Of the 1,440 minutes in each day, you only need to devote 10 of them to ensuring the best dental care for your mouth!
