Tips on Keeping Your Teeth White After a Whitening Treatment

If you’ve noticed that your teeth are no longer the bright shade of white that they once were, you may want to consider teeth whitening treatment. There are many different whitening systems available to eliminate discoloration. However, many people opt for teeth whitening treatments performed at their dentist’s office because they provide fast, dramatic results.

After receiving a teeth whitening treatment, you’ll surely want to avoid staining that could diminish your newly-white smile. Here are our top tips for keeping your teeth white after a whitening treatment:

Avoid Coffee and Tea

If you sip on coffee or tea every morning, you should consider taking a break from these beverages in the first 4 to 5 days after teeth whitening treatment as coffee and tea both contribute to tooth discoloration. After the first few days following treatment, you can start drinking coffee and tea again, but consider using a straw to limit contact between the drink and your pearly whites.

Avoid Red Foods as They Can Stain Too

While most people know that coffee and tea have the potential to stain teeth, it’s less widely-known that red foods also have staining powers. Tomatoes and tomato-based products, like ketchup and marinara sauce, may discolor your teeth after a whitening treatment. So, stay away from red foods for the first few days after your treatment, instead opting for “white” foods like chicken, fish, rice, pasta, white cheese, yogurt, cauliflower, and bananas.

Rinse After Eating or Drinking

Rinsing your mouth with water immediately after eating or drinking can help prevent discoloration after teeth whitening. This will prevent any substances that could stain your teeth from sitting on the surface of your teeth throughout the day.
